CANADIAN CLASSIC FIGURE CHAMPION 2007 - Carla Di Giusto
Just over a year ago, I had the pleasure of meeting two new training program participants who would become good friends, Carla and Ivan Di Giusto. Little did I know then, that within a year, Carla would win her first figure competition at one of Canada’s most prestigious shows – the International Drug Free Athletics Canadian Classic Natural Bodybuilding, Figure & Fitness Championships.
When I first spoke to Carla, she was only considering taking part in a figure competition. It wasn't long, though, before Carla committed to this goal. Figure competitions can be frightening; aside from the hard training and dieting, Carla would have to showcase her body to hundreds of people, lining up with many other women with perfectly athletic physiques.
Carla's decision was very exciting news for me. Here was an individual who had a vision and was ready to go for it. This was an opportunity for me to work with my first figure competitor and gain experience in prepping someone for a show. So I hunkered down and began working on a customized training regime of strength/cardiovascular and nutritional programming that would help Carla reach her goal of competition. It was a difficult and challenging task, but very rewarding!
Coming from an athletic background and having competed at an elite level myself, I understand commitment and discipline. And after spending three hours a week with Carla for the past 12 months, I can honestly say that Carla puts most elite athletes to shame when it comes to both discipline and commitment. Carla never missed a training session with me and she followed her nutritional and supplemental protocols to the letter. She also took the initiative to conduct her own research, and made some great contacts that have helped her succeed in the sport of figure competition.
Given her commitment to training and changing her body, it may be hard to believe that Carla has time for life outside of the gym, but she balances her physical training with family life and work as a full-time employee of the federal government. This is part of what is fascinating about Carla: despite her busy schedule, she is willing to go above and beyond to reach her goals. Talk about 150% commitment to herself and her goals!
Carla, thank you for being such a good sport and an inspiration to me and many others. I appreciate your hard work, and the trust you had in me and my passion for what I do to help you reach your goals. You certainly deserve all of your success.
